Kestrel, 25, white, she/they. Trans & Powerful

i really need to start looking into and developing my list of possible PhD programs since my ideal would be to begin applying within the next two to three years but every time i start searching for lists of programs it just freaks me out and i stop. i think i just need to make a friend sit down with me irl at some point while i look around at pages. i guess i should probably start working on a writing sample of some sort too. och this whole process is just nerve wracking

being trans is actually the coolest

literally actually coming to terms with being a weird fucked up tranny and connecting with other weird fucked up trannies has done more for my confidence and mental health than any drug ive ever been prescribed or any therapy session ive ever sat through

books 12 and 13

books 12 for this year was another Terry Pratchett book b/c Small Gods put me in a mood. this time it was Thud! which is probably the book of his i have the most mixed feelings about after reading. it centers on an ancestral conflict between Dwarfs and Trolls and how that conflict is used as propaganda in a number of directions and centers mob mentality and prejudice as its major talking points but its just. it’s okay at best. i think this is the first of his books i’ve read that really prominently centers Trolls and definitely the first one with a Troll narrator and it’s just very cringey at best to read how he’s written them. it feels like using what is quickly approaching caricature to comment on societal stratification and i think he really bit off more than he could chew. it had a lot of solid moments, but i think as a commentary it fell rather flat. i guess they can’t all knock it out of the park

book 13 is a new graphic novel, Mamo by Sas Milledge, which i read all of  this morning. i didn’t even read the back when i bought it, the art just jumped out to me immediately and i knew i’d fall for it. i was right! a story of witches and debt and reciprocity all told through a beautifully illustrated style, which really pinged at a lot of tendencies i’ve been seeing in my own writing style lately. i think this is one i’ll be revisiting a lot! i also have a student who loves graphic novels and we’ve bonded over them in the past, so i’ll be loaning it to her once the summer vacation ends.

at the moment i’ve started a handful of books and am trying to find the one that i’ll be finishing next. my friend really wants me to finish Pachinko, which i started ages ago and never finished, but The Snake That Fell to Earth, All About Love, and Revolting Bodies are all pieces i’ve read a chapter or two from and have yet to finish off. we shall see!

my dads recently been jokin a lot about “mystic runes” like i asked what we were gonna do when we took a rest stop in santa barbara and he said “look for mystic runes” and then i asked if we were gonna eat or just walk around while my mom shopped and he said “the runes will tell us”

Hey CT, working the grill at a Wendy's (praise Hestia) and it's slow so I'm thinking about magic. Thoughts on the Planetary Metals and how they would relate to fast food cooking and service?
